double

Any T5.5 ECU will do for you mate. Make sure the sticker says "AFM5 5" and not "AFM7 7" or "AFM 5 2"

If you're unlucky you'll get one with AMD flashes and if you're really out of luck that one won't erase. Problem is that most of 'em have AMD flash chips and that sellers don't know what's in the box (you have to open it and have a look at the text on the flash chips to make sure what type they are).
I've had no problems with Intels and CSI chips. Seems that about 10-20% of the boxes with AMD chips have problems, some of which can be cured by erasing multiple times, some of which have to have the flash chips replaced for new ones.

Ooops...sorry. I thought it specifically had to be from a 9000 '94 manual without TCS etc.

Ta for those links, will find the best price and get it ordered. Hopefully be here by the time I get back from next weeks holiday. I'm printing off the manuals and taking those as a bit 'light' reading!

Thanks again for your help

Ok, last 2 questions (for today)...I promise!

I've found a Saab breaker in uk who has following two ECU for equivalent of 40 euro ech posted (very reasonable I thought). I assume there is nothing to choose between them as you don't know which part number will have which chip type in it?

1) AFM5 5A03 4660833
2) AFM5 5A08 4300331

The lead to connect BDM to PC/laptop, it's a Centronics 36 pin male to female right? i.e a printer extension cable? (not a printer cable, I have one of these but printer end is 25 pin different to centronics)

Oops again, the centronics is the printer end. I therefore need the 25 pin male/female lead?

Yes, a 25 pin 1:1 connected cable will to just fine (extension cord)!

Thanks for that, ECU now ordered. Think I've got everything else on order except for the ECU connector. Ok, can do it with crocodile clips but looks darn site easier with a connector...

Starting reading through the manual lastnight...I assume either you or Monsieuer Nilsson is an automotive engineer? (I am also..)

I would be the nerdy software engineer who has an embedded automotive background and who has learned a great deal from others in the last two years.

Ah, so between you probably know what you are doing :)

I wasn't joking about taking the manual on holiday to read it thoroughly (twice as it happens). A colleague sent this photo she took while we up at a lake in the pyrenees...looks like the section on PID control. We did the maths of this during my mech eng degree and had to use some software (similar to matlab) so simulate this sort of system. I remember it nearly caused my brain to melt doing the stuff from first principals...

ECU was waiting at post office so I now have this and pleased to see it has 'Flash' chips and not AMD's (which seems to be better according to readings)

On the subject of the manual, I haven't had chance to chat to my mate much as only got the Saab after he went out to France on paternity leave (we went to visit them). Anyway, he was most interested in the manual as he's into that sort of thing (he develops the algorithms/cal strategy that determine when the service light should come on for soot/diesel in oil). He was thoroughly impressed and also amazed at the work that's gone into it as it covers not just the phyiscal interface but also the theory behind the parameters that can be changed. He was also surprised that the old 9000 had CAN bus interface and then made sure I hadn't gone and bought one as his drawer is overflowing with them! (CAN to USB).

Hi I would like to is is it ok to install the AFR for narrow band lambda- like this one made by stri racing- it costs me ca 60E, also has voltage meter and Turbo cooling timer, thanks for help
stri timer with AFR : www.striracing.com/pro_t.htm

I have another one - can I install EGT sensor in the exhaust manifold on my claasic Saab 900, before Turbo unit- it has a plug right there- I could use for sensor, thanks Rafal
1992 Classic Saab 900 T5- Stage 2 being "suited" :)waiting for JT exhaust and special downpipe
1998 Saab 9-5 Aut B205e-stage1 from this forum viewtopic.php?f=33&t=1821- runs great :))

Narrow band lambda reader can only show lean or rich mixture, not how lean or how rich so it's nothing to spend money on.
When it comes to a turbo timer I would say thats a waste of money on a Saab as well, water cooled CHRA with passive cooling after the car has shut down keeps this sorted as well, just remember to run the car on idle for a few seconds before shutting down to let the turbine spool down :)

Yes the EGR plug can be used for EGT readings, DIlemma does that on his 9000.

Thanks for answer, I think I will buy LC-1- I think the one-Dilemma uses- I prefere to pay once for checked and better stuff, I found it on ebay :
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0400950422
I hope that I will soon post few interesting bins to check - one from 1995 b205 9000 - comparing to other cars it is very fast, and one from 2004 aero, aut 9-5, probably upgraded with Hirsch- turbo needle goes to half of red when You start moving withaout pressing accl. to the floor.
Anyway I realize that I have a lot ,lot of things to learn, check and pass thru until I could say that I know a bit of how to tune Saab. But thanks to teachers like You I belive that it is possible- and can bring a lot of fun :)), and effort too

but one more quest. - do You think that installing an ubgraded blow off valve is recommended and needed- and how we can adjust the valve to get proper pressure- is it the same procedure as adjusting basic prassure?- or should we first adjust basic pressure, then install blow off valve and then check it againg , and then adjust blow off ( or basic pressure again) , thanks - if it is written in the T5 manual- I am sorry I didn't find time too read it all yet, Rafal

Good thinking about the LC-1, quite affordable compared to what you get!

Upgraded blow off valve is also some waste of money in these first stages unless you are thinking about the one from 9-5 which is reinforced to withstand 1,5bar. Cheap upgrade! :)
There is noting to adjust on one of these, intake manifold pressure keeps them closed then they should be, what you could do on a 9000 is to turn them the other way(like 9-5) so the pressure from the intake pipe helps the valve to stay closed.

If you decide to use one of the aftermarket ones it should be set as loose as possible if you want to save the turbo. As hard as possible for more sound.
