As there seems to be some issues at connecting with canusb here is a FAQ thread for that as well. Will post some more links and pictures soon.

A few notes from J.K regarding flashing with canusb:

I think my CANUSB is dying on me :( I've started to get alot of write errors at the start of a flash (T7tool) and I never had those before. Sometimes I have to restart a flash up to ten times before it starts flashing but as soon as it starts there is no problem. Tried different computers and shorter CAN cables and I get those write errors on all of them. Some computers are worse so maybe a part of the problem is usb power related? I know it won't write at all if I use my eee-pc running on batteries but on mains its fine.

same problem here - usualy i have to try 2 or 3 times before it starts.
I always use P-pus.
I can check if its power related since my notebook has one USB port with reinforced current for charging devices.
I never had any problem with removed from car ECU and external power suply.

I ordered a Lawicel CANUSB from EasySync Ltd a few weeks ago. They recently e-mailed me to tell me that the Lawicel CANUSB has been discontinued and replaced with the USB2-F-7001. (http://www.easysync-ltd.com/index.html?lang=en-uk&target=d20.html#p99)

Does anyone have any experience with this adapter or know if this works with T7Suite?
I'm beginning to think that EasySync is being a tad bit misleading, as I don't think it is made by Lawicel.

I'm interested in this too. (Hello everyone!)

I just bought a 2001 Saab 9-5 2.3t OBDII U.S. I've owned one classic 900 and three NG900 SE's in the past but this is my first saab in about 4 years.

I'm excited to start tuning but need a CANUSB interface and am not sure if the new one sold by easysynch is compatible.

Does anyone know a source for a lawicel CANUSB in the states???

I really appreciate this site, all the info, and especially the awesome guys who developed the software which is going to let me do this. You guys are great!

After getting familiar with all this stuff i'm excited to get some CNG (compressed natural gas) maps going as CNG is only $0.90 a gallon where I live in Utah and has the added bonus of 130MON (Motor Octane)

This could get interesting... First things first though, I need a CANUSB!

I decided to err on the side of caution and canceled my order with EasySync. Maybe EasySync's adapter works with T7Suite, who knows, but I didn't feel like being a guinea pig.

I placed an order for a CANUSB from Kanda.com. They're in the UK but they do business with folks in the states. Hopefully things will work out better with them.

Just check with multimeter between these contacts and ECU-s pin 62 (CANH) and 63 (CANL). If you find connections then why not to try with CANUSB :)

CANUSB needs only GROUND, CANH and CANL. Power for intenal parts (+5V) is coming from laptop's USB port, that's enough for this thing :)

You can try several times, do restart to Suite between and reconnect CANUSB. It happens that connection is established sometimes after 4-th or 5-th times. Possibly it depends of quality of cable, not sure.

Trying to read ECU via CAN BUS on my desk out of the car. Double checked all of my connections and everything appears to be connected correctly.

I click "read ecu through CAN BUS" in T5Suite. It's been saying "Starting upload of bootloader" for about 5 minutes now. The bar is slowly scrolling. The red light is illuminated on the CAN USB. I have seen no activity from the green LED.
I do not have ground hooked up to the CAN USB device. Do I need to if flashing on the bench?

Thanks!

Just got past that stage. Now it's transferring but only at 37 b/s. In the documentation the example is transferring at 960 b/s.

My cables are properly twisted.

Did you attach a terminator resistor (120 Ohm) ?
Transfer should be ~1000 b/s if you have a proper connection.

No sir. I guess i got confused by the documentation. I thought it said the BUS was already terminated.

I shall add one tonight.

Do I need to add ground to CAN USB when flashing on the bench?

The Can bus is a network that needs to be terminated by 120 Ohm on both ends of the network.
Trionic 5 is terminated inside the trionic ECU and needs to be terminated on the other end by you. Since there is no canbus network present in a Trionic 5 car this is always the case (in car and on the desk).

Trionic 7 is also terminated in the ECU but in the car the network is already terminated so in that case there's no need to terminate on the canusb side. On the desk, there's no network present and so you need to terminate the network yourselves. This is the major difference between T5 and T7 cars concerning the termination. Since i have a T5 car i installed the terminator resistor inside the canusb connector because it is always needed.

/Guido

PS. Uploading the bootloader is a matter of seconds. If it takes long for the first "block" in the progress bar to appear and the red light is on, there's definitely something wrong.

I'm using ordinary CAT3 cable (4 twisted pairs inside - one pair for CANH & CANL and one wire for ground) with 150 ohm resistor and it works ok.
My friend uses high quality CAT3 cable without resistor and it works perfectly. Other friend uses
same "low cost" cable like me but without resistor and CANUSB sometimes connects randomly, usually after second or third try.
We used same CANUSB dongle.
So my conclusion is: when you use good and perfectly shielded cable then resistor might not needed.

Resistor did the trick. Uploads the bootloader fast now. No red lights.

I do have another problem now though. When I open the binary in T5 Suite it tells me the file checksum is incorrect.
Whats the next step?
